Immediate Needs

Emergency shelter is no longer required -- the tents supplied by LIF are more than enough. Clean water, toilets, cooking stoves with fuel, and clothing are still urgently needed. Additional medical supplies may also be required, as an assessme

Relief Assistance

Three assessment teams have been, or still are, in the area (LIF, UN/IOM/IFRC and YTB). The following organizations are all involved in the relief effort -- LIF, PMI, Satiapila, Walhi, IOM, WHO, YTB (Yayasan Tanggul Bencana), MSF, IFRC,ACT (Action by Churches Together International), WFP, and Samaritan's Purse . There is also a CWS logistics and health team in the area; CWS are also distributing goods at the GOR stadium. Several meetings have been held to better coordinate relief efforts and maximize resources (a general meeting with NGO's and the local government on 26.10.05, and a sanitation planning meeting on 27.10.05). According to sources from the field, there are currently enough tents for the IDPs, food distribution is adequate, and there are more tanks with drinking water set up near the affected areas. Future improvements in sanitation are still needed.

Goods Sent

LIF - 646 Shelter boxes containing (1xsmall kerosene stove, 4xmattresses, 1xsleeping bag, 1xhand saw, 1xhammer, 6xplates, 1xtape measure and 1xrope (10m)), approximately 1000 Family Tents, 100 Sarongs, Rice (1 tonne),instant noodles -- 100 boxes, sugar -- 100 kg, salted Fish -- 50 kg, cooking oil -- 100 lt., biscuits -- 100 boxes, sweetened milk -- 100 cans (250ml each), jerry cans -- 5 units (20.10.05).

PMI - 46 volunteers and 40 family tents sent to the area. IFRC -- 400 cooking sets, 400 tents, 400 food parcels.

ACT -- three truck loads of non-food items including health kits, blankets, BP-5, family tents and baby kits.

Additional Critical Supplies

As of 18:00 , 27.10.05, LIF staff and volunteers have assembled 210 tents, the majority of which are now occupied (1 family per tent). LIF plans to finish setting up 400 tents before Lebaron (03.11.05). The shelter boxes and other remaining supplies are currently stored at the Simpang Semadam elementary school (S.D. Simpang Semadam) and at Satkorlat (in Kutacane) and will be distributed as soon as possible.

Two areas (one in front of the permanent LIF posko , and one nearby) are currently available and ready to be used as water distribution flexible water tanks, each with 3000L capacity; a n LIF water truck (4000L capacity) will soon arrive to service the tanks and to transport water to other areas where it is badly needed.

Immediate Requirements for IDPs (according to OCHA report ref: OCHA/GVA-2005/0177)

5 large tents, 300 small tents, medical kits, cooking kits and food for approx. 1000 families.

LIF Posko

LIF has set up a permanent posko on in Simpang Semadam (look for the LIF banner and a water tank on the left side of the road if heading south from Kutacane) and a temporary posko just south of the disaster zone and Desa Lawe Beringin Gayo (look for a blue tent (and soon water tanks) on the right side of the road if heading south from Kutacane, just past the last water crossing)).

Additionally, LIF is currently assessing suitable sites adjacent the disaster area in order to set up a permanent base camp. This base camp will act as a home for the IDPs until they are able to be housed permanently and will be supplied to cover all of their basic needs. This is necessary, as the local government plans to move IDPs from the GOR stadium and other temporary shelter areas as soon as possible.

Transport

The airport at Kutacane (Alas Leuser) is open and operational as is the main

Kutacane-Medan road. impassable at the disaster site but detour routes are The course of the Lawe Beringin R iver has shifted slightly n orth , and therefore water has been spilling over the road approximately 50 meters north of the bridge on the Medan-Kutacane road .

'Landslide' update

The disaster in Aceh Tenggara could have been far deadlier, had most people not panicked and fled their homes after the initial flood of water surged through the area at 20:00 , 18.10.05. Over 12,000 residents evacuated their homes at this time, carrying their most essential possessions. At 02:00 , 19.10.05, soil, massive logs, and rocks were carried downstream by a second 'flash flood'. This second flood, which destroyed almost 400 homes, could easily have resulted in many human casualties. Thankfully, most of the residents who evacuated during the first flood have already been able to return to their homes. Coming from Medan, vehicles can make a left turn at either Desa Lawe Pakam or Desa Deski (just before Desa Simpang Semadam). From both of these turn-offs, vehicles will have to follow the bitumen road that passes by the airport. This road eventually returns to the Medan-Kutacane road at Kutalanglang (vehicles may choose to return to the main Medan-Kutacane road by taking one of the many roads that branch off to the right). From Kutacane to Medan, follow the above instructions in reverse (the last available detour can be taken at Desa Simpang Kebun Sere).
